February saw Hull FC make an historic trip to Australia to play the first Super League game outside Europe. The match was played against Wigan Warriors at the WIN stadium, in Wollongong, NSW. Among the thousands of fans who made the journey were many of our VPs including our oldest member Sylvia Brindle. Meeting up for pre-match drinks in Steelers Bar was memorable creating an amazing atmosphere in the build up to kick-off. Despite losing 24:10 to Wigan on the night with an injury hit team there was still a great sense of pride and achievement watching the black and whites play in a prestigious event that will help put English Rugby league on the map. The locals certainly found out about “Old Faithful!”
The following day fans had a chance to meet up with players on the beach at Kiama for a relaxed get-together. Some VP’s got to meet up with their sponsored player for 2018, Brad Fash.
The second game was played at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney against NRL team St George Illawarra Dragons. The team put up a feisty performance and it was a close fought contest to the end with the final score from St George sealing a victory on the 76th minute. Fans and pundits alike praised the black and whites performance. It was great to see some of the Hull FC “family” attending to support the black and whites including Fans Favourite Steve Michaels and the Pritchard family.
The whole trip was an amazing experience and one that will be remembered for a very long time.
